Modalert is used to treat excessive daytime sleepiness (narcolepsy). People with narcolepsy often fall asleep suddenly during normal waking hours. Modalert can improve, but does not totally cure, this tendency to fall asleep unexpectedly. Modalert is also used to treat shift work sleep disorder, in which shift workers suffer sleeping problems due to their work routine. Modalert cannot replace adequate sleep and rest.

Modalert (Provigil/Alertec/Modavigil/Modalert, in India) is an analeptic drug manufactured by Cephalon, and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of narcolepsy, shift work sleep disorder, and excessive daytime sleepiness associated with obstructive sleep apnea.
